A favorite artist in the Rogue Valley Symphony’s 2008-2009 season, Elinor Frey returns by popular demand to again perform with the orchestra. She first performed here as a member of Quartetto Gelato. Her work as recitalist, chamber player, and soloist has earned growing acclaim and she is much in demand to introduce new works for cello. In 2005 she gave the New York premiere of Betsy Jolas’s concerto Wanderlied with the New Juilliard Ensemble, and in 2007 she gave the world premiere of Steven Stucky’s Dialoghi, which the composer wrote especially for her. He built the music’s theme on the letters of her first name.
She has toured Turkey with New Paths, New Music and performed at the American Academy in Rome, Italy. She also released her first album of solo works and duo pieces with pianist David Fung. She has served as the cellist of the Aspen Music Festival Contemporary Ensemble and is currently a guest artist with the Society for New Music in Syracuse and Ensemble KORE in Montreal. She has played for numerous festivals including Kneisel Hall, the Norfolk Contemporary Session, Fontainebleau Music Festival, and has held two long-term residencies at the Banff Center.
In 2004 she won the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle competition and the Virtu Foundation Scholarship. Now a Doctor of Music candidate at McGill University, she received her earlier degrees from The Juilliard School and the Mannes College of Music in New York. She plays on a beautiful 1962 Mario Gadda cello. Her baroque bow was made by Louis Begin and she commissioned her modern bow from Charles Espey.
Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon
Founded by music teachers and members of the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon's (YSSO) first concert was held in Ashland on December 4, 1988. YSSO conductors have included Clarence Shaw, Arthur Shaw, Fred Palmer, Sylvain Fremaux, Phillip Bayles, Leanna Sterios, Ellie Malzahn and Faina Podolnaya. Cynthia Hutton has led the orchestra as Music Director and Conductor since 1995.
Currently, the YSSO concert season includes three Community Outreach Concerts at the Rogue Valley Manor, two Chamber Music Series concerts, eight Concert Series performances and the annual Concerto Competition. The YSSO's three ensembles include accomplished brass, string, woodwind and percussion musicians from throughout southern Oregon.
The YSSO is an integral part of the region's cultural community. Musicians in the Youth Symphony performed with the Rogue Valley Symphony in 2007 and will collaborate with the Rogue Valley Symphony in side-by-side performances again during the 2010-2011 concert season.
