Arthur Shaw
Music Director/Conductor
This
is Arthur Shaw's twentieth season with the Rogue Valley Symphony.
During his first few years here he instituted three new programs which have brought joy to the whole community ever since:
- Holiday Candlelight Concerts
- Sampler Concerts for youngsters and their families
- Chamber Players string ensemble classroom demonstrations in schools throughout southern Oregon
A talented violinist, he "cannot remember life before the violin." He has a Master's degree in conducting from Wichita State University in Kansas, where he played as concertmaster in the university orchestra, and he has also studied with
- The International Master Course in Vienna,
- Jon Robertson, conductor of the Redlands Symphony in Southern California,
- Herbert Blomstedt, former conductor of the San Francisco Symphony,
- Conducting workshop in Bulgaria.
In addition, he was one of 12 selected worldwide to conduct the New York Symphony under the tutelage of Ascher Temkin and George Thymis.
Shaw came to the Rogue Valley Symphony from Adrian, Michigan, where he taught at Adrian College and Wayne State University and conducted the Adrian Symphony and the Wayne State University orchestra.
When he's not making music, he'd rather be sailing in the San Juans, challenging all comers at the Symphony's annual golf tournament, or skiing Mt. Ashland.
