A Day of Music
Every
year, Rogue and Illinois Valley teachers travel with their classes to
South Medford High School to experience a performance by a live symphony
orchestra. The Rogue Valley Symphony is proud to facilitate this opportunity
though our, “A Day of Music.”
This is an exciting field trip, where the auditorium is filled four times throughout the day with students from all over Southern Oregon. The audience is treated to a half hour presentation designed to enhance their understanding of a full orchestra.
This year, Maestro Martin Majkut has selected two pieces that address the 3rd – 6th graders at their level. During “A Pocket-Sized Guide to the Orchestra,” by Michael Lankester, instruments enter the stage one by one. While the conductor speaks to the audience, he is upstaged by activity behind him. Later, students help him to identify the mischief makers, showing their knowledge of the orchestra.
“The Thrill of the Orchestra,” by Russell Peck, colorfully illustrates the instruments and how they are played. It is frequently performed by major American and foreign orchestras, and more than 100 regional orchestras across the United States. We are happy to offer this experience to students here at home.

Students may also attend any regular series Rogue Valley Symphony concerts for only $5.
